In the interest of historical accuracy, "indentured servitude", also called "indentured labor", was rather different from "chattal slavery".
Indentured labor was for a period of years, usually to pay off a debt, such as the debt of passage to the colonies. The indentured laborers were mostly white.
Related to indentured labor was the apprentice system, where a boy would be bound to work for a master for a period of years in return for learning a skill or trade.
The blacks were held in chattal slavery. They and their offspring were owned in perpetuity by the slave holder, much as domestic animals.
