I agree with everything that you said. That is why I mentioned that Braveheart should not be used as an example of actual scottish history. As for when the kilt was "invented" I don't think that it ever was invented. It just evolved. The western European people used great swaths of fabric in various forms to cover themselves and use as shelter and places to carry stuff for thousands of years. The kilt evolved from this material. There have been small samples of Plaid material found that predate the typical seventeenth century common example. Even Austria has entered the debate claiming that they invented the kilt. I refer back to a previous post of mine which sets forth the premise of "Who give a shit?" Kilts are fun, comfortable, practical and predominantly Celtic. After that I don't care. I bet if you asked Erich Von Daniken he would claim that extraterrestrials invented the kilt.
