Tartan/Plaid skirts have been around a number of years.
The kilted skirt is not that new also.
It is just that the kilt makers/sellers in the UK have
expanded their line (men's kilts) to include women offering
a short kilt (billie) and the more traditional length below
the knee. Kilt makers and sellers from other countries are
now making the kilt for both.
So the kilt is now no longer just a garmet for men. There are differences to note:
1) The direction of the apron wrap - Men Left over Right - Women Right to Left.
Not necessarily a fixed rule due to custom designs.2) The number and size of straps buckles - Men 1 inch or more and 2 to 3 straps
(normally 1 left through waist and 1 right at waist with one more just below)
- Women 2 straps/buckles less than 1 inch and both on left hip/waist.3) Hem length - Men standard waist to knee 22-24 inches - Women anything
from mini to maxi 12-30 inches. Hem length is measured normally at navel
for men and for women anywhere south of that point but usually no more
than 3 inches above widest hip point.4) Weight & length of material: Mens 11 to 16 ounces and 4-8 yards - Womens
not over 13 oz and 6 yards unless custom made. The more yardage and weight of
material - results in more and deeper pleats.
Pleats can be the normal traditional knife pleat or the box pleat.
Better quality mens kilts feature a reverse final pleat blending the
overlapping aprons. So whatever you do don't wait too long. You will be missing out on all the
entertaining things you can do wearing the kilt. You want the ladies to be jealous of you wearing the kilt not the reverse!
