I totally agree with Chris' stance. It's all about control and how comfortable others feel about you wearing a kilt. And truthfully, what you wear has absolutely no impact on anyone. But control here is really the issue. Do "they" care how you feel? Hell no! It's only about their feelings and how "comfortable" they feel. This parallels closely with inter-racial marriage, which was against the law in many states only forty some years ago. It made no impact on others, it was just how someone else “felt” that caused ridiculous laws banning inter-racial marriage in certain (and mostly southern) states. Now we Americans can look back on those laws and see how unjust the laws truly were.
Now in California, people are fighting for the right to same sex marriages. Same as inter-racial marriage forty years ago, who you marry has absolutely no impact on anyone else. The far right would like Californians to believe that all hell will break loose and our children will somehow be damaged by same-sex marriage, when discussed in the classroom. Nothing like this has happened so far. The Religious Right always seems to use scare tactics and our children to inflict their own religious beliefs on the American public and secure their control as some sort of moral dictator to the nation. As a school teacher I find it not only offensive but HIGHLY un-American, as to allow one special interest group to control and deny the same rights that they enjoy, all in the name of “saving” our kids. We wouldn't discriminate against any other group of Americans, so why are we discriminating against Gays, Lesbians, Bi-sexual and Transgender? Since when has discrimination been a good thing?
Now whether you agree with this issue or not, think about this: If one group of people are allowed to deny fundamental rights to another group of people, do you really think this will end there? America was built on securing freedoms. Our early American fought to be free and treated equal. What's really scary is that the conservatives have somehow demonized the term "liberal" to be equated with "uncontrolled" and "dangerous." This is seriously how Fascism got started. You don't think it could happen here? Think again. These kinds of tactics have happened all through history and the masses never saw it coming until it was too late. Nazi Germany was not too long ago and look what happened to the Jews. Remember this: Securing the freedom for one group of people secures the freedom for all. Deny the freedom for one group and you are denying freedom for everyone.
Don't let anyone tell you what you can wear and not wear. Once someone takes away your right to wear a kilt, they'll look for other things to take away or control as well. The British did it to the Scottish. History is destined to repeat itself unless we are careful.
