a common area of origin had NO bearing on what made a clan, and the scots would NOT have considered area of origin. It is irrelevant as all scots are from scotland.
a 16th to 17th 18th century clan chief would not have proclaimed an area of origin relevant because of course all of his clan would have been born and raised. I really do not think he would have held the future american and canadian descendants in much thought would he ????
"ties of a common history" I have an friend whos parents were italian immigrants, I have never heard him all himself a roman or legionnaire just because his parents were italian.
if all american desendants are part of a scottish clan, then maybe all italian desendants are roman legionaires and maybe all of the guys who work at my local kebab shop are part of the anceint order of hittites lol
