Mac, the Scots are very aware that there was migration from Ireland to what is now Scotland. It's only 90 miles away at their nearest points, and are visible to one another!!!
What is most commonly accepted is that what we call the kilt was developed from what is now called the Great Kilt. Remember the Roman toga? That was a heavier robe worn over a linen tunic. This was the same situation among the Celts. They wore a "plaid" (Celtic for blanket) over their leine (= tunic). The development of colors and whatnot to the point where we would recognize it as kilt-related was probably in the 15-16th centuries.
For various reasons over the following centuries--mostly practicality in military use--the "plaid" was cut down to the below-the-waist model we know now.
Btw, you imply in your response that you live in a land which rythms with Fina. Is that possible?
