why kilts...originally?

i just spent a couple of hours trying to find an answer to my query
i found out just about everything else :-)
what prompted men to don kilts in the first place
was it simply convenience (ie, easy to relieve oneself, or easy for the lassie of your choice to relieve herself...and offer the lad of her choosing a little relief in the process 8-)
or what
and why in the world would it matter so if a man chose to wear his fine garment made from 3.5 (or less), or 4, or 8, or 10.5 yards of the finest worsted
and then there is the box or knife debate...
i'm sure you've already tackled this umteenzillion times...but humor me
and in case it got lost in the prolixity, my primary Q is why kilts...originally
if you'd like to comment on the rest of my blather, that'll be fine and welcome
but just tell me why kilts came about in the first place and i may yet die a happy man :-)
thanks lads
