Non-Braveheart Alternatives

This website is devoted to the strictly masculine "Braveheart" approach to wearing men's kilts and other male unbifurcated garments.  Nevertheless, we recognize and respect the fact that there are many men who have gender issues that are not addressed by the Braveheart approach.  There are many men who are unhappy living within the masculine stereotype imposed by our society and who desire opportunities to express their "feminine side," in varying degrees, through their clothing and appearance.

Some men may wish to become "gender liberated" by incorporating women's skirts, dresses, and other items of feminine clothing into their wardrobe.  These men are sometimes referred to as "Freestylers."

Other men may feel the need to cross the gender boundary by dressing and presenting themselves as women - either occasionally or on a more regular basis.  These are "cross-dressers" or "transvestites" (CDs or TVs for short).

Bravehearts typically wear men's kilts and male unbifurcated garments (MUGs) for comfort and like to maintain a thoroughly masculine image. They may have little understanding of men who wear skirts and other clothing from the women's department.  But Bravehearts and Freestylers also have a common goal that transcends their individual preferences with regard to appearing more "masculine" or more "feminine." Their common goal is to overcome the fear of the feminine, which prevents men from discovering and expressing their true selves.
Bravehearts prefer an unambiguously masculine image while wearing men's kilts and MUGs. Although they don't want to appear feminine, they don't let the fear of the feminine deny them the physical comfort of skirted garments simply because some people might confuse kilts with women's clothing.
Freestylers may prefer a more androgynous or feminine image. They don't let the fear of the feminine prevent them from wearing traditionally female clothing if it looks good, feels good, or expresses their personality.

Although Bravehearts, Freestylers, and CD/TVs all challenge the "trouser only" masculine stereotype in their own way, these alternative approaches should not be confused with one another.  The masculine Braveheart approach to kilt and MUG wearing is motivated by comfort and compatibility with male anatomy, rather than discomfort with the masculine gender.  Bravehearts believe that the popular acceptance of men's kilts and MUGs will be enhanced by maintaining a strictly masculine image.  However, we recognize that this approach may not satisfy the needs of men who wish to free themselves from the confines of the masculine stereotype altogether.

Therefore, Kiltmen.com is including the following links for those men who are interested in exploring, expanding, and/or crossing the boundaries of gender.
